Russia strikes Kyiv and Odesa ports; Ukraine hits Russian oil infrastructure
The war continues to affect global energy prices and grain supply. No direct Australian action required. Worth understanding as a driver of the global economic conditions that do affect Australia.
In a nutshell: On 1 August Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv, killing at least nine people. On 2 August Russian forces struck port infrastructure in Odesa and Mykolaiv, hitting fuel tanks and a cargo ship. Ukraine confirmed strikes on three Russian oil refineries in Bashkortostan and on an airfield at Engels. The war is in its 2026 winter–spring offensive phase with no ceasefire in sight.
What they’re saying
Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed Kyiv strikes. Russian and Ukrainian claims on damage to each other’s infrastructure are unverified and routinely overstated.
No Australian action is needed; track if energy prices shift materially.
