Sixty thousand migrants breached Ceuta; sixty-seven dead, EU fractures

A large-scale humanitarian crisis and a live European political rupture. No direct Australian consequence, but the EU’s response is reshaping migration policy, Schengen politics and Spain–Morocco relations with durable effects.

In a nutshell: Between Thursday 30 July and Friday 31 July, 50,000–60,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. At least 67 died — some drowned, others crushed in a stampede at a breakwater barrier. Spain installed a 500-metre sea barrier and began pushbacks. Italy closed its border with Spain on 31 July. Twenty-two EU heads of state wrote to the European Commission describing Spain’s April 2026 migrant regularisation as a ’pull factor’.
