Participation is compulsory by law. Non-completion can result in a fine. Your answers directly shape funding for schools, hospitals, public transport and community services in your area for the next five years. Fines apply to individuals who refuse without lawful excuse.

In a nutshell: Australia’s 19th Census of Population and Housing is on Tuesday 11 August 2026, conducted by the ABS. Every person in Australia that night — including visitors, international students and temporary visa holders — must be counted. Most households received a letter with a 16-digit code to complete the form online. You can complete it now if you know where you’ll be tomorrow night. Paper forms are available by calling 1800 130 250.

The ABS has deployed around 30,000 field staff nationally to follow up households that don’t complete the form. Reminder letters go to non-completers in mid-August.

This year’s form includes new questions on gender and sexual orientation, as well as up to 66 questions covering ancestry, religion, income and transport.

Go to abs.gov.au/census with your 16-digit code. Do it before or on Tuesday 11 August night. If travelling that night, complete it early based on where you’ll be.
