Census forms arriving now — every Australian must complete by 11 August
Completion is a legal obligation for every person in Australia on Census night, including visitors and temporary residents. Non-completion can attract a fine. The deadline is fixed.
In a nutshell: The 2026 Census of Population and Housing takes place on Tuesday 11 August. Instructions are arriving in letterboxes and myGov inboxes this week. The form can be completed online now if you know where you will be that night. Paper forms remain available on request. New questions this year cover sexual orientation, gender identity and expanded ancestry options. Every household and individual must participate.
