In a nutshell: The 2026 Australian Census of Population and Housing takes place on Tuesday 11 August 2026, conducted by the ABS. Every household should have received instructions from late July. The form can be completed online now if you know where you’ll be on census night. New questions this year include sexual orientation and gender identity for those aged 16 and over, and up to four ancestries (up from two).
